想い

The KOBELCO Future Pioneering Co-Creation Research Center is a new business creation platform established through the efforts of Osaka University and KOBELCO. By tapping into KOBELCO's vast wealth of manufacturing experience and technologies across a wide range of fields, and by combining it with Osaka University's advanced technologies and scientific prowess in numerous fields including AI, we aim to achieve the implementation of solutions throughout society. One defining characteristic of our Research Center is our horizontal, inter-organizational structure that enables collaboration with university researchers in a variety of academic fields. Furthermore, by placing a heavy focus on the "creation of new businesses" rather than settling on a single-minded "in-depth exploration of elemental technologies," we recognize that our Research Center distinguishes itself as a truly one-of-a-kind institution.

As we engage in our activities, we envision our goal of creating solutions that have not yet been realized and that provide the user with value they will come to appreciate over time, thereby providing delight and inspiration at the site of manufacturing and throughout greater society. As an initial step, we intend on generating ideas by focusing on collaboration that combines the metal machining technologies that have been developed through KOBELCO's diverse range of businesses with technologies developed by researchers in the field of AI at Osaka University. Based on our process where we start by identifying the envisioned goals and "issues" faced by manufacturing companies in Japan, we strive to offer solutions that will be useful in real-life situations in a broad range of manufacturing fields.

We look forward to your inquiries on any issues your company is facing in relation to manufacturing in a wide range of manufacturing fields, such as inquiries related to production process innovations, methods for shifting toward high-value added work operations, human resource development and skills transferring, as well as problems faced on a daily basis at the site of manufacturing, and other issues that tend to get placed on the back burner. Our firm belief is that true "co-creation" is deeply rooted in the creation of solutions based on such interactions and dialogue.

The Different Phases of Our Efforts at the Future Pioneering Co-Creation Research Center

Phase1

Engaging in dialogue with companies
Identifying the core of their problems

By conducting interviews with companies and engaging in qualitative and quantitative research, we will identify the "problems" being faced in the field and the solutions that can potentially transform Japanese manufacturing.

Phase2

Co-creating ideas to lead us into the future

By placing a focus on the latent needs that remain hidden within such "problems," we will collaboratively generate ideas through workshops and discussions.

Phase3

Conducting technological assessments
Co-creating solutions

We will examine and assess the variety of "technological seeds" that we can offer and find those that best fit the issue to be solved, and we will combine AI integrated technologies, research results obtained in other fields, and other technologies to develop solutions for such problems.

Phase4

Conducting pilot projects together with companies

We will conduct pilot projects together with companies to work toward the practical application of such technologies, and we will perform assessments based on a process of trial and error.

Phase5

Achieving enhanced and enriched manufacturing through societal implementation

As a result of such pilot projects, we aim to implement solutions throughout society so that they can be utilized at the site of manufacture, thereby contributing to the achievement of enhanced and enriched manufacturing.

Background for the Establishment of
Our Research Center

For the manufacturing industry, promoting the growth of personnel at the manufacturing site and the transferring and enhancement of their know-how, and bringing about innovation in manufacturing process technologies are both activities that are absolutely essential. In the face of rapid environmental change, as exemplified in decarbonization efforts being carried out in recent years, such activities are taking on an even greater importance. With the labor force expected to further decrease in the future due to the declining birth rate and aging population, there is a vital need to continuously and more actively engage in these activities. In order to solve such issues, we believe that it is absolutely imperative that we achieve a form of manufacturing that continues to evolve while enabling humans and digital technologies to coexist, and we must work towards the societal implementation of solutions that can bring about such manufacturing innovation.
By going beyond the limits of elemental research, Osaka University's SANKEN has continued to engage in efforts to actively utilize the fruits of its research to bring about innovation in the fields of industry and throughout society. In particular, the institution possesses world-class research capabilities in such fields related to digital technologies as AI, and through pilot projects, the institution continues to deepen the extent of its research. At the same time, the KOBELCO Group, under its DX strategic policy of "striving to serve as a products and solutions provider that solves social issues together with its customers," operates with the aim of utilizing its digital solutions that it has developed for a wide range of business fields not only for internal applications, but to also use such solutions to solve a broad range of social issues as well. This mutual understanding shared between both organizations, acted as the catalyst for the establishment of our Research Center.

Our Goals

At the KOBELCO Future Pioneering Co-Creation Research Center, we aim to develop and achieve societal implementation of "manufacturing innovation solutions" that combine the advanced technologies and the scientific prowess of Osaka University in order to create value across a wide range of industries. Furthermore, we intend on creating new businesses through co-creation, with the goal of enhancing the KOBELCO Group's corporate value and to contribute to the further evolution of academia and science at Osaka University.
